about Bill
art direction and graphic art for feature film and television.
In the Art Department is is prudent and necessary to pre-visualize a set. Most often it is done with sketches and construction plans, but with the addition of the 3D element using programs like AutoCAD, SketchUP, and Lightwave... a set's size and scale come to life on the page.

This series of images are a pre-visualization of a real world make-over. The top two images are the offices in their current state. Careful scouting and measurements are always essential when building a stage set, or location set. Every aspect of the offices were built into the model, with the exception of decoration items.

The model was then copied and deconstructed to make room for a proposed atrium and a more open lobby plan. With a thorough inspection of the roofing system, and the years of additions taken into consideration, the proper space was carved out to create a higher ceiling in the entrance.

The model was then rebuilt, removing unnecessary office walls and opening up a bit of unused or limited use space. Recessed can lights were used throughout to give even and dimable lighting. I then constructed couches, tables, chairs, and every other piece of decoration for placement into the file.

Once the placement of all decoration items were finalized, stills were rendered for approval. When the stills were approved, I generated a camera fly through of the lobby and waiting area so that every aspect of the new look could be visualized.

Not every project has the time for such detail and rendering methods.... But when there is time.... It makes such a difference.
